The LIAISE COST Action Training School will bring together Ph.D. students, early-career researchers, and professionals working on Industrial Symbiosis and sustainable policy development. The training school will provide a comprehensive program designed to deepen participants’ understanding of IS from economic, environmental, and social perspectives.
Over three days, participants will engage in interactive presentations, discussions, and hands-on activities to gain both theoretical knowledge and practical tools for applying IS in their respective fields.
Training School Program Overview
Day 1: Introduction to Industrial Symbiosis
- What is Industrial Symbiosis? An introduction to the concept and its role in fostering sustainable practices.
- The Circular Economy and its Connection to IS: How IS fits within the broader circular economy framework.
- The Growing Importance of IS in Achieving SDGs: Exploring the role of industrial symbiosis in supporting the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly those related to sustainable production and consumption.
Day 2: Economic and Environmental Benefits of Industrial Symbiosis
- Cost Savings Through Shared Resources and Reduced Waste Disposal: Analyzing the financial benefits of IS for businesses and communities.
- Reduction in Carbon Footprint and Other Environmental Impacts: Examining the environmental advantages of IS networks, including waste reduction, energy efficiency, and resource optimization.
- Long-Term Sustainability Benefits for Companies and Communities: Understanding the lasting impact of IS on business models, local economies, and community resilience.
Day 3: Stakeholder Engagement and Collaboration in Industrial Symbiosis
- Identifying Stakeholders: Businesses, local governments, communities, and NGOs.
- Building Trust and Cooperation Among Stakeholders: Strategies for fostering collaboration among diverse stakeholders.
- The Role of Policy, Regulation, and Digital Transformation in Facilitating IS Networks: Investigating how policies and digital tools support the development and expansion of IS initiatives.
- Final Project: Start developing a comprehensive IS model (preliminary research on a local IS opportunity might be required as part of the application).

- Ph.D. students and early-career researchers working on IS and sustainability.
- Professionals in industries applying IS practices, with at least a graduate degree.
- Academics, policy professionals, and industry leaders involved in IS networks or circular economy initiatives.
