The workshop “Eco-Bridges: Fostering Understanding and Engagement in Industrial Symbiosis for a Sustainable Future” of LIAISE COST Action was part of a larger gathering that included a scientific conference on experimental and numerical methods, a Regional Innovation Forum, and various workshops on topics such as intellectual property protection and the internationalization of domestic businesses.

Hosted by Dr. Miloš Milošević, from the Innovation Center at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, the workshop brought together 41 participants representing academia, industry, and policymakers, all focused on promoting industrial symbiosis and circular economy practices. Dr. Milošević opened the session by emphasizing the need for a shift from traditional linear models of production to Industrial Symbiosis, where waste becomes a resource for other industries. He highlighted that this change is essential for reducing the need for new raw materials and minimizing environmental impact.

Participants were introduced to cutting-edge research and real-world applications that support Industrial Symbiosis. Dr. Miljana Mirković from the Institute of Nuclear Sciences “Vinca” presented eco-friendly methods for producing antimicrobial materials. Prof. Dr. Olivera Ećim demonstrated the role of machine learning in optimizing industrial drying processes, showing how these technologies contribute to energy efficiency. Jelena Vučićević from Novos Company shared a case study on improving energy efficiency in electricity production using specialized chemicals.

Further insights were provided by Prof. Dr. Filip Kokalj from the University of Maribor, who discussed methods for optimizing heavy metal leaching from waste-to-energy bottom ash. His presentation underlined how waste can be transformed into valuable resources, exemplifying the practical application of Circular Economy principles. Prof. Dr. Mihajlo Popović closed the session with a feasibility study on additive manufacturing technologies for producing specialized parts, demonstrating the potential for reducing waste in small-batch production.

In addition to the scientific discussions, the workshop fostered cross-sector partnerships by addressing the barriers to implementing Industrial Symbiosis. Discussions explored the environmental, economic, technical, and regulatory challenges and provided strategies to overcome these obstacles. The event aimed to raise awareness of the benefits and potential of Industrial Symbiosis, contributing to a broader adoption of sustainable practices.

Participants expressed appreciation for the range of topics covered and the practical applications presented, recognizing the importance of collaboration in driving sustainability initiatives. As a platform for knowledge sharing and innovation, the workshop succeeded in highlighting the key role of Industrial Symbiosis in achieving sustainability goals and fostering a more Circular Economy.

Dr. Milošević concluded by encouraging attendees to continue exploring Industrial Symbiosis and collaboration, stressing its importance in building a sustainable future.
