Advancing Circular Solutions: WG2 members Tackles Industrial Symbiosis Challenge from a non-technical perspective

On 17th September 2024, the first in-person meeting of WG2 (Industrial Symbiosis Business Models) under the LIAISE COST Action was successfully held at Istanbul Aydin University, Türkiye. The event marked a significant step toward addressing key barriers and advancing industrial symbiosis (IS) practices to promote circular business models across various sectors.
The event started with an overview of WG2’s activities, including five virtual meetings held between November 2023 and July 2024, where research topics such as regulatory frameworks, financial incentives, and knowledge-sharing obstacles were identified as key challenges to IS.
The internal discussion session focused on finalizing the structure of a progress paper based on case studies from different LIAISE COST Action countries. Participants revised the title, clarified key concepts and discussed the geographical and methodological aspects of IS.
The afternoon featured three engaging presentations by industry experts.
- Dr. Emrah Alkaya, Partner at GTE, discussed industrial symbiosis practices in Turkey, emphasizing the importance of cross-sector collaboration and regulatory improvements to promote sustainability.
- Fatih Ersoy, CEO of ERSOPLAST, shared insights on circular economy practices in the plastic sector, focusing on ERSOPLAST’s recycling operations.
- Dr. Orçun Saf, R&D Manager at Standart Profil, addressed the engineering challenges of using recycled plastics in the automotive industry.
